What are the most stolen cars in the UK?

Here are the top five car models thieves are most likely to target

Car theft is becoming a serious problem in the UK, affecting thousands of people every year. According to the latest data from Statista, there were 130,521 motor vehicle thefts in England and Wales in 2022/23. That’s a staggering increase of 20.8% compared to the previous year when 108,028 vehicles were stolen (an alarmingly high figure itself). But which cars are most likely to be targeted by thieves and why? In this article, we’ll reveal the top 5 most stolen cars in the UK.

What makes certain cars more attractive to thieves?

Whilst all our vehicles carry a risk of theft, certain factors make some more enticing targets for thieves than others. These factors include:

  • Vulnerable security features: Some cars have weak or outdated security features that make them easier to break into and start.
  • Demand for spare parts: Some cars have parts that are in high demand as they are expensive or hard to find. This creates an incentive for thieves to steal these cars and strip them for their spares to sell.
  • Market value of the vehicle: Some cars have a high market value because they are new, luxurious, rare, or customised. These cars can attract thieves who want to make a quick profit by selling them whole or in parts.
  • Popularity of make or model: Some cars are more popular than others which often means they are in higher demand as both a whole and in parts.

The top 5 most stolen cars in the UK

1. Ford Fiesta

According to data released by the DVLA, in 2022 the Ford Fiesta rose to become the most stolen car in the UK. Given its status as the most popular car in the UK, this may come as no surprise, making it readily available for thieves on our roads.

Furthermore, with Ford’s recent announcement to bring a halt to the production of the Fiesta, thieves have identified a prime market opportunity to capitalise on, aiming to take advantage of the expected increase in the cost of spare parts.

2. Land Rover Range Rover

In second place is the Land Rover Range Rover, consistently ranking near the top for car thefts in the UK for several reasons. The luxury SUV’s desirability and high market value have made it a prime target for thieves seeking to make significant profits on the black market.

Additionally, older models of the Range Rover are susceptible to keyless theft, a method used by thieves involving the use of devices that intercept and amplify signals from the owner's key fob allowing them the freedom of entry.

3. Ford Focus

With over 2,000 reported stolen in 2022, the Ford Focus's status as one of Britain's best-selling cars has made it an attractive target for thieves seeking quick profits placing it in third place. Its straightforward mechanical design simplifies break-ins and hotwiring, and the car's popularity has created a respectable market for stolen parts that thieves can sell for a profit.

4. Volkswagen Golf

Following the Ford Focus, we have the Volkswagen Golf. As one of the most commonly seen vehicles on our roads, the classic and reliable car is readily available for thieves to target. What’s more, its prevalence on the streets converts to a consistent demand for spare parts, which can command high prices in the black market. Older models of the Golf, in particular, are also noted for having security features that are not so robust.

5. Land Rover Discovery

In fifth place, the Discovery. The second high-end SUV manufactured by Land Rover that appeals to thieves thanks to its high value allowing them to sell it on for a hefty profit. In 2022 alone, just under 2,000 Discoveries were stolen, a rise of 52.4% from the previous year. Again, as with the Range Rover, this can also be put down to the keyless entry system being exploited by thieves.

What can I do to prevent my car from being stolen?

If you own one of these vehicles, or just want to do the most to protect your car from thieves, there are a few precautionary actions you can take. These include:

  • Park in a well-lit and busy area: Thieves are less likely to target cars parked in areas with high visibility and foot traffic.
  • Use a steering wheel lock or immobiliser: These devices make it difficult for thieves to drive away with your car.
  • Avoid leaving valuables inside your car: Valuables such as laptops, phones, and wallets can attract thieves. If you must leave something valuable in your car, keep it out of sight.
  • Install a tracking device or alarm system: These devices can help you locate your car if it’s stolen and deter thieves from targeting your vehicle.
