What’s the difference between a convertible and a cabriolet?

Before we feature some of the best open top cars available right now, you may well be wondering what the difference is between a convertible and a cabriolet. The truth is, there’s not actually a huge amount of dissimilarity between the two - it very much depends on your preferred choice of words.

In terms of functionality, both refer to open roof capabilities - be it a soft top or hard top car. If you want to be really picky though, generally, the term ‘convertible’ is used in reference to a car that has a folding or detachable roof, whilst the term ‘cabriolet’ technically means the roof only folds down and doesn’t detach from the body of the car.

Audi TT Roadster

A classic choice for convertible lovers, we couldn’t leave the Audi TT Roadster off our top five best convertible and cabriolet cars 2022. Not only does it look the part, but the Audi TT Roadster is so much more than just a ‘good looking’ car. Clever in its convertible offering, the TT’s soft top has a specially-designed triple-layer fabric roof which has been developed to reduce road noise when it is closed.

Fans of sport-style cars will live their best life when hitting the open road in this timeless classic, all whilst benefiting from Audi’s comprehensive and innovative in-car technologies. With its head-turning looks, you’re bound to impress on any occasion with the Audi TT two-door Roadster. Prices start at £36,590.
